Guaranteed Ride Home makes sure that you never get stranded late at night, and can get to where you need to in the event of a daytime emergency.

This service comes under many different names, and already exists in many communities. Where it already exists, flexible carpoolers join the existing system. Where it doesn't, flexible carpooling will set one up.

If you know you will have to work late, be a driver that day, or plan your trip around that need. This service is for the times that your plans get changed by things outside your control.

If you need the service, you call the operator of the database and they will organise a ride for you, in most cases with a taxi. In some cities the taxi is paid directly by the provider, in others the rider pays for the taxi and claims the cost back.

Some cities limit the amount per trip, the distance, and or the number of times it can be used in a year, while others see it as an emergency system that shouldn't have any limit on it. Certainly it will always be limited by a 'fair use' policy, since it is there for emergencies.

In a flexible carpooling system you will be charged one 'ride credit' for your guaranteed ride home and the balance of the cost will be paid by the system.
