Flexible Carpooling

Here are some links for flexible carpooling and also for more traditional carpooling.

Here is a link to an animation that shows how a formalised flexible carpooling system could work.

These links are for information about the existing informal flexible carpooling systems: 'slug lines' in Northern Virginia, slugline map (html 500kb), or slugline map (pdf 50kb) and 'casual carpooling in San Francisco', casual carpool map (html 500kb), or casual carpool map (pdf 50kb). And an article about casual carpooling and the environment (or here) though we disagree with his conclusions about energy consumption impacts.

Traditional carpooling involves pre-arrangement through some mechanism, such as online or work based matching. While we believe that carpooling without pre-arrangement will be a more effective solution for many people, it will only work where there are routes set up. For everywhere else the more traditional approach will still be needed.

There are many systems out there that are designed to make it easier for you to find a carpool partner, for example Goose Networks. There are also local suppliers of services, for example commuter services in North Florida. If you live in North Florida this link will get you to a service you could sign up for. See here for a great TV commercial that Commuter Services put together (note it is 4mb so will take a few moments to load).

If you would like your system or your local service listed below, please send an email to paulminett AT tripconvergence DOT co.nz.
